Leaning To Grow Through Criticism

We all face criticism. Sometimes it comes gently, wrapped in concern. Other times it arrives harsh and cutting, leaving us wounded and discouraged. No matter how it comes, criticism is a part of life—and how we respond to it will shape who we become.

It’s easy to become defensive when criticized. Our natural instinct is to protect ourselves, to explain, or even to strike back. But there is great strength in pausing and asking, “Is there something here I can learn?” Even imperfect criticism can contain a seed of truth that helps us grow.

The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” Sometimes the sharpening process is uncomfortable, but it is necessary if we are to become better, stronger, and wiser.

Not all criticism is meant to help. Some words are spoken מתוך jealousy, anger, or misunderstanding. In those moments, we must learn discernment. Don’t allow every negative voice to take root in your heart. Measure what is said against truth, wisdom, and God’s Word. Accept what builds you up—and let the rest fall away.

Remember, even Jesus Christ faced criticism. He was misunderstood, mocked, and rejected—yet He never allowed those voices to distract Him from His purpose. Instead, He remained focused on His mission and continued walking in truth and love.

Criticism can either break you or build you. The difference lies in your response. If you allow it, it can refine your character, deepen your humility, and strengthen your resolve.

So today, when criticism comes your way:

Listen with humility Learn what you can Let go of what is harmful And keep moving forward with confidence

You are not defined by the opinions of others—you are shaped by how you grow through them.

Keep your heart steady, your spirit teachable, and your eyes on the path God has set before you.
