Can You Spare A Minute Or So 5/21?

If you can’t find five minutes, can you spare just two or three?

5/21 Can You Spare A Minute?

5/21–Four boys made an excuse of how they’d had a flat tire that morning. Since class was nearly over, they asked if they could take a make-up test later. The professor said, “I’ll do better than that. Just have a seat in the four corners of the classroom and I’ll prepare a special final exam just for you. I’ll make it so easy that you only have to answer one question.” The guys looked at each other in surprise and smiled. The professor continued as he passed out a piece of paper to each young man, “If all four of you answer this question correctly, you will all receive an A for the semester. However, if any one of you misses it, you’ll all fail.” The four guys were still grinning when he handed them their paper, but their smiles disappeared when they turned over the sheets. The single question on the final exam stared them in the face: “Which tire was flat?

Beware That Life Will Never Recognize When You Have Arrived

There was a man standing on a hill looking down on a man in the valley. The man on the hill said to himself I am here and the man in the valley is there. I don’t want to be here, I want to be there. I will just go join the man in the valley and then I can be there too!

So the man on the hill hastened to join the man in the valley, for he had always longed to be there. When he finally got to the man in the valley he was so happy he exclaimed to the man I am finally there.

The man in the valley said no my son you are here. The man on the hill said please tell me where there is so I can finally be there. The man in the valley said you see that hill you just came from? Well that is there and you are here.

So, when you long to get there in life, life will let you know you haven’t arrived.

When I get $1 million dollars, get married, get my drivers license, you think, I will finally be there. You get married and then feel like it will take a child before you are finally there. Then you think when I get this child raised and through school….. well, you get my point!

We seem to never be there because we are always here!!

How To Navigate Life’s Storms

Let Paul teach you about the storms in the Acts 27

Acts 27 13-44—And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete. But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon. And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive. And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat: Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven. And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship; And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship. And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away. But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss. And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship. For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me. Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island. But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country; And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms. Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day. And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship, Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved. Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off. And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing. Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you. And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat. And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls. And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea. And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship. And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore. And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves. And the soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape. But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land: And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.

5/20–Ignore What Is Not Profitable

Story:

As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.

Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.

In South Africa diamond miners must search through thousands of tons of dirt to find one precious diamond.

Sometimes we are  inclined to search through an entire congregation of diamonds to find a little bit of dirt.

5/19—Don’t Worry About The Delta

Story:

At a cocktail party one evening, a famous pianist gave a recital. Afterward, her hostess said, “I would gave anything to be able to play like you.”

The pianist looked at her thoughtfully for a moment and replied, “No you wouldn’t.”

The hostess, surprised and embarrassed in front of her guest, said, “I most certainly would.”

The pianist shook her head. “You would love to play as I play now, but you are not willing to practice eight hours a day for twenty years to learn how to play that way.”

Take whatever you want, said God, but pay for it!
