The Lesson of the strangler fig
Today while I was hiking, I approached this beautiful old tree. It was like the tree was reaching out toward the sky. As I looked closer I noticed that it wasn’t one tree but two. My guide Peter explained that the tree was a beautiful oak tree and the roots growing around it was called a strangler fig. He went on to explain that the only way a strangler fig survives is to attach itself to another tree. Over the course of years to fix slowly cuts off the nourishment of the Oak tree and as a result it ultimately kills the oak tree.
I sat and thought about how profound that Oaktree was and thought about how many strangler figs try to penetrate our lives.
People who attach themselves to us while we were growing and appear to be rising up with us, but in truth they are slowly draining the life out of us—people who are not able to make it on their own so they reach out to stronger people so they can live, without concern for others, just themselves.
By the time we realize what is happening, it is too late. We don’t have the strength to fight –
and just slowly die.
It is important for us to take a deep look into our souls and decide for ourselves which role we will allow the strangler fig to play in our lives—and how we must prevent the grasping strangler fig from draining the life out of us so that we may become the mighty oak that reaches for the stars knowing there are no limits’
This is not my original work, don’t know who it belongs to but it is so good!

Moan and groan—how many of you know people that all they do is moan and groan?
People say I’m not happy with my job. They say 87% of the people go to job that they hate.
We have the dubious distinction in this country that on Monday morning between 6 an 9AM the heart attack rate increases over 35%!! People going to jobs that they hate. Their hearts tell them didn’t I tell you I didn’t want to go and they attack them?I can imagine that some of y’all don’t want to go to work next Monday.
People all they do is moan and groan. I’m not making enough money, I’m unhappy with my job! So, the thing about it is this…. all some people do is moan and groan.
I heard a story about some men on a porch. A man was walking by and heard the dog howling and whining. He asked the men why the dog was whining. They said he was laying on a nail. The man asked them why the dog didn’t get off the nail. He said because it wasn’t hurting enough.
I heard someone say that God gave us Ten Commandments but if He has given an eleventh it would have been “Thou Shall Not

Colossians 3:14-15
And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

If you can’t find two minutes, can you spare just one?
So, you’re having a rough day— Who and what are you comparing it to? You woke up this morning, millions didn’t.
Did you sleep in a car last night, millions were homeless. Did you have more good health than sickness?, so many don’t. Do you have a bank account, food in a cabinet or refrigerator?
What to do when you are feeling sorry for yourself… Go to the hospital, nursing home, funeral home, junenile detention home (while there be glad your loved ones aren’t there). Go visit some old folks and just listen, they don’t need you to say anything. Have you still got your right mind? I know several folks who don’t. They were once smart, maybe smarter than you and me.
Pity Parties…Has anyone ever attended any you have had. If they did I’m sure they didn’t stay long. If you have success with feeling sorry for yourself, go for it…as for me, count me out. Even Job in the Bible, with all his troubles, was required to stand on his feet like a man.
Try to make someone else happy and to feel important–There is not any way to make someone else happy and not get some of it for yourself.
The day you learn to get your mind off yourself long enough to think of others, is the day your life will take on a different meaning. A life of serving others makes a very rich, fulfilling life.
Be Positive—When you get negativity out of your life, take notice how others react to you.
You’ll see a great difference! You will never want to go back to the old way.
Play more offense and less defense…Michael Jordan remarked that too many players at the end of the game were concentrating on not losing, rather than on winning. Some are thinking so heavily on reacting, that they are not nearly proactive as they need to be. Instead of waiting on someone else to initiate the mood (your mood), try setting the tone to the one you want. You have a choice, don’t let anyone or anything take that from you.

How many of you know that if you had your life to live over you could’ve done better? How many know that there is something else that life has for you and that is why you are here?
You have to start monitoring your inner conversation and start talking to yourself with positive thoughts. You have to replace those old self-destructive thoughts with new positive thoughts!
Most people are not in the arena of because they don’t want to fight or get knocked down, so they spend their entire life sitting on the sidelines.
Discouragement is one of the main weapons of the enemy. It is one of the most used. Discouragement will catch a ride with you on the way to work. If it misses you it will be there when you get there. Then it will try to catch a ride with you on your way back home.
Might I suggest to you that you make a list? Get a sheet of paper, preferably a lined sheet of paper. Draw a vertical line down the middle. On one side put everything good. Now, if you are not too ashamed on the other side of that vertical line put everything that is bad. I hope if you start with the good side first that you don’t ever make it to the bad side.
They asked George Bernard Shaw if he had his life to live over who would he like to be. He said the man he never was. I don’t even know you but I know this about you that you have the ability to do more. The very fact that God woke you up this morning means that God isn’t through with you yet.
I would read the Bible through five times but it will take five years and I’m already 60 years old. Well, how old will you be in five years if you don’t read it five times?
Oliver Wendell Holmes said that most people go to their grave with their music still in them.
The cemetery is richer than Fort Knox. In the cemetery are songs never sung, books never written, apologies never made and love never expressed.
Someday Isle is a lonely place to be marooned. Millions of people are stuck on Someday I’ll do this that or the other.
Scripture:
Ecclesiastes 9:10
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

6/14—People were created to be loved, things were created to be used. The reason why the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used.

The “Coronary and Ulcer Club” lists the following rules for members…
1. Your job comes first. Forget everything else.
2. Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays are fine times to be working at the office. There will be nobody else there to bother you.
3. Always have your briefcase with you when not at your desk. This provides an opportunity to review completely all the troubles and worries of the day.
4. Never say “no” to a request. Always say “yes.”
5. Accept all invitations to meetings, banquets, committees, etc.
6. All forms of recreation are a waste of time.
7. Never delegate responsibility to others; carry the entire load yourself.
8. If your work calls for traveling, work all day and travel at night to keep that appointment you made for eight the next morning.
9. No matter how many jobs you already are doing, remember you always can take on more.

A group of seminary students gathered in the chapel one day as the dean challenged them to NOT pray for a large church because of the stress, problems and worries that go with it. The next year one of the students who graduated returned to give his testimony. He said, “I did ask God for a big church; however, I also asked God for a pretty wife. My prayer was ALMOST answered. Instead of getting a big church and a pretty wife, I got a pretty church and a big wife!”
