Scripture: “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” — Bible Exodus 20:12
One of the first lessons many of us learn in life is the importance of honoring and obeying our parents. It is more than good manners—it is a principle of wisdom, character, and blessing.
Parents may not be perfect, but God often uses them to teach us respect, discipline, and right from wrong. A child who learns obedience at home is better prepared to succeed in life. Obedience builds humility, and humility opens the door to growth.
Notice the Bible doesn’t just say obey your father and mother—it says honor them. Honor goes beyond compliance. It means respect, gratitude, and valuing their guidance.
Even as adults, honoring parents can mean listening to wise counsel, caring for them, speaking kindly of them, and showing appreciation for the sacrifices they made.
Why obeying and honoring parents matters:
1. It teaches respect for authority.
Learning to honor parents helps prepare us to honor God and respect others.
2. It protects us from foolish decisions.
Parents often see dangers we do not.
3. It brings blessing.
This commandment comes with a promise—well-being and longevity.
4. It reflects a grateful heart.
Honor says, “I recognize what you have done for me.”
A Thought to Remember:
The one who learns to honor those who raised them often rises higher in life.
A Little Humor:
Someone said, “When I was sixteen, I thought my father knew very little. By the time I was twenty-one, I was amazed how much he had learned in five years!”
Funny—but true.
Challenge for Today:
If your parents are living, call them, thank them, or show them kindness.
If they have passed on, honor their memory by living out the good they taught you.
