The Folly Of Getting The Last Lick

Have you ever felt the urge to get even? Someone says something hurtful, treats you unfairly, or takes advantage of your kindness, and suddenly the desire to get the last lick rises up inside you. Human nature tells us that if someone hurts us, we ought to hurt them back. But wisdom teaches a different lesson.

Many relationships have been damaged because neither person was willing to let the matter go. One harsh word led to another. One act of retaliation led to another. Before long, both sides had lost far more than either ever gained.

True strength is not found in getting even. True strength is found in self-control. It takes far more character to walk away from a fight than to continue one. It takes greater courage to forgive than to seek revenge.

When we insist on getting the last lick, we often keep old wounds alive. We replay offenses in our minds and allow bitterness to steal our joy. But when we choose to let go, we free ourselves from carrying that heavy burden.

Remember, not every battle needs to be fought. Not every criticism deserves a response. Not every wrong requires retaliation. Sometimes the greatest victory is refusing to lower yourself to the level of the offense.

Life is too short to spend it keeping score. Leave room for grace. Leave room for mercy. Leave room for God to work in situations that are beyond your control.

Today, if someone wrongs you, resist the urge to get the last lick. Choose the higher road. Choose peace over pride, forgiveness over revenge, and wisdom over retaliation. In the end, the person who masters their spirit is far stronger than the person who wins an argument.

Today’s Challenge: Think of a situation where you’ve been tempted to “get even.” Instead of seeking retaliation, choose one act of kindness, forgiveness, or silence. You may discover that letting go brings a greater victory than getting the last word.

“He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.” — Proverbs 16:32
