“Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.”
Integrity is one of the most valuable qualities a person can possess. Money can be lost and earned again. Positions can come and go. Popularity can disappear overnight. But when you have integrity, you possess something that gives value to everything else in your life—a good name and a clear conscience.
Integrity means that what we say and what we do agree with each other.
It means we keep our word even when keeping it becomes inconvenient. It means we tell the truth even when a lie might make things easier. It means we treat people fairly even when there is nothing for us to gain.
Anyone can appear honest when people are watching. The real test comes when no one is around to applaud us, correct us, or hold us accountable.
That is where character is revealed.
There will be times when doing the right thing costs you something. You may lose an opportunity. Someone may misunderstand you. You might have to admit that you were wrong. But the temporary cost of integrity is far less than the lasting cost of losing people’s trust.
The Bible says:
“The integrity of the upright shall guide them.” — Proverbs 11:3
I love that word guide. Integrity becomes like a compass. When you aren’t sure what decision to make, you can ask yourself:
What is the right thing to do?
Not the easiest thing.
Not the most profitable thing.
Not the thing everyone else is doing.
The right thing.
When integrity becomes your guide, many decisions become much simpler.
You won’t have to remember which story you told because you told the truth.
You won’t have to worry about being exposed because you have nothing to hide.
You won’t need to convince everyone that you are trustworthy because, over time, your life will prove it.
Your reputation is what people think you are.
Your character is what God knows you are.
So today, determine to be the same person in private that you are in public. Keep your promises. Admit your mistakes. Treat people honestly. Do what is right—even when it is difficult and even when nobody will ever know.
Because somebody does know.
You know. And God knows.
Thought for Today
Integrity may not always make the road easier, but it will help you walk that road with your head held high, your conscience clear, and your character intact.
Choose integrity today. A good name takes years to build, but it can become one of the greatest legacies you ever leave behind.
